BE CONSCIOUS OF THE POWER OF OUR WORDS

Writer's picture: James RuleJames Rule

“I AM MAKING PROGRESS”

This was my stock response in one of my Chief Executive roles whenever anybody, including my wife, asked how I was doing. She would joke about my always responding in the same way as she knew the reality of the extreme pressure I was operating under on a daily basis.

I could have found a reason to express emotions of frustration, stress, anxiety or overwhelm.

There was a strategy however in constantly churning out the same stock response. I recognised the power of my words and this simple phrase provided me with a number of key benefits.

It shifted my focus from the enormity of the challenges I faced to recognising the progress that was being made to address them.

This shift in focus helped condition me to acknowledge even the smallest wins as validation that progress was indeed being made, which in turn empowered my mindset.

As a consequence it helped me maintain the daily energy and enthusiasm needed to continue leading effectively and working to resolve the various challenges.

Repetition helps anchor habits and beliefs. Repeating this statement certainly anchored in me the belief that each and every challenge could be overcome.

There is so much power in the words we use. It is easy to fall into the trap of using words that increase our levels of stress, disempower our mindset and erode our energy and belief.

The next time somebody asks you how things are going when under pressure, try responding with “I am making progress” because when you really take the time to reflect, the reality is that you will be in some way, however small.

Acknowledging this will help you maintain the energy, mindset and resilience you need to keep moving forward.
