Psychological safety is a shared belief held by members of a team that others on the team will not embarrass , reject or punish them for speaking up.

Leaders need to create psychological safety in their team if they want to optimise performance, productivity and innovation.

Here are some essential steps to ensure they create it:

1) ACTIVE LISTENING - Practice as a leader and encourage team to do the same. Demonstrate that ideas and opinions are valued.

2) ARTICULATE EXPECTATIONS - Ensure everybody has clarity on their role and responsibilities and ensure everybody is held accountable.

3) COLLABORATION - Ensure staff collaborate and work as a team on key projects. This deepens bonds and strengthens relationships.

4) MANAGE MISTAKES - Establish the lessons from mistakes, share them widely within the team and ensure the mistake is not repeated. This is far more effective than criticising and apportioning blame.

5) CELEBRATE SUCCESS - Weak leaders are quick to apportion blame and slow to praise. Reverse that trend and ensure you celebrate individual and team wins. Praise them individually and praise them in front of peers.

6) SUPPORT THE UNDER PERFORMER - Every member of a team can experience a dip in performance at some stage. When that dip occurs provide support through training, coaching or mentoring.
