Practicing visualisation is an X factor for high performers in sport. In my experience it is rarely adapted by leaders in industry.
When I raise it with clients as a practice to consider it is frequently met with cynicism. However I always encourage clients to test every tool and practice before they dismiss and that philosophy has enabled numerous leaders to embrace it and create some powerful results.
I recently watched the Arnold Schwarzenegger documentary on Netflix. For anybody who doubts the power of visualisation I encourage you to watch it.
He talks about the ridicule he experienced when as a teenager in Austria he declared he was going to become a body builder and win Mr Universe.
When he moved into acting he was again ridiculed for his appearance, name and accent and frequently told it would be impossible to make it as an actor. He became one of the most globally recognised actors in history!
Finally when he decided to run for Governor of California he was met by people articulating all the reasons he would not be successful, why he could not make that his first role in politics.
However at every stage he talks about the power of seeing himself achieving his goal, seeing himself on the body building podium, hearing people chanting his name.
His visualisation ensured he never lost his self belief and motivation to keep taking the action that drove him towards his goals.
If you are unfamiliar with how to visualise and are interested in exploring how it can give you an X factor in your performance then please do get in touch. Supporting people to discover this game changing practice is a major focus of our work at The Lonely Leader.
