Every leader will set the tone in their organisation through a combination of their words, actions and body language.
An essential trait for a leader to display across all three areas is positivity.
This is particularly relevant when leading through periods of adversity.
It is relatively easy to lead when everything is progressing to plan.
However, when an individual, team or organisation encounters adversity they will look to their leader for direction. Displaying panic and negativity can be infectious, as can positivity.
I do not believe in positivity in terms of blind optimism. In reality, all things cannot turn out exactly as we hope and a leader must be cognisant of that.
I define it as a recognition that irrespective of what happens we can and must deal with it.
So instead of panic we must focus on what is within our control and ensure we tackle those things displaying a positive attitude in our words, actions and body language. This will inspire those around us to do the same.
This collective approach builds a belief and a momentum throughout the organisation that can invariably lead to the challenge being overcome.
