I believe possessing the ability to communicate well is essential for all leaders. When I reflect on my tenures as a CEO I recognise that my communication skills were tested on a daily basis.

I accept that engaging and effective communication does not come naturally to all of us. It is imperative to remember it is a skill, and like all skills it can be developed with practice. It is an area of development I focus heavily on with our clients.

Here are some areas where I feel the competent communicator has an advantage as a leader.

The ability to articulate mission and purpose.

This needs to be established in all organisations and must be articulated by the leader. The staff need clarity of what the organisation is striving to achieve. They also need to understand their role and how it contributes to that vision. They will look to their leader to establish that clarity.

Loyalty.

A leader who genuinely communicates with his staff and takes the time to get to know them will develop a culture where staff feel valued. This in turn builds incredible loyalty to the organisation and the leader. That loyalty is a priceless resource that every leader needs to draw upon at some stage.

Inspire.

A leader can inspire their team with their words. This is particularly true during periods of adversity when the right words can help dissipate stress and galvanise the team to keep taking action and moving forward.

Dispute resolution.

Tensions can surface between staff and good communication can facilitate resolution before issues become damaging to relationships and performance.

Recruitment of staff.

Competition has always been fierce for the recruitment of top quality staff, and that competition has intensified significantly recently. A leader who is an engaging communicator can have a very positive impact in the recruitment process.
