Motivation is defined as ‘the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal orientated behaviours. It is what causes us to act.’


I think it is pertinent to leaders in two core areas. Firstly Self Motivation.





I believe leaders need the capacity to be self motivated to take the actions necessary to achieve their personal and professional goals.


“The things you do when no one else is looking are the things that define you.”


I think this quote illustrates the notion of self motivation well. Leaders need to build the habits and daily routines that allow them them to create and maintain high levels of self motivation. This is especially true when leading teams and organisations through periods of adversity which can drain and deplete motivation.


Secondly, Team Motivation. Many staff will draw motivation from their leader. There is no one size fits all approach. A leader needs to truly understand their team and find the ways to inspire and motivate each individual. This takes time, and active listening is essential to develop that understanding.


Once developed, the key is to make staff feel valued. This can be achieved in a variety of ways but key are aspects such as giving them autonomy and recognising and rewarding high performance.


Staff will look to their leader and observe what behaviours they are role modelling. It is worth noting that previously featured leadership essentials such as body language, positivity and composure (see previous blog posts at www.thelonelyleader.co.uk) all play a part in influencing the motivation of a team.
