LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS: TIP 19

Writer's picture: James RuleJames Rule

Presence is a multi-faceted leadership essential. I have seen how it manifests on a sporting field during my time as a professional rugby player and in the boardroom during my tenures as a chief executive.

At 6’5” and 17 stone I have a physical presence that proved useful in a sporting context. In certain sports, you try and physically dominate your opponent. This can be a form of leadership as your actions have the power to inspire your team mates.

However, physical attributes have far less relevance in business. In this context, presence is about bringing your full attention to bear in each interaction you engage in.

As a leader we want our staff and stakeholders to feel valued. Giving them your presence is a powerful yet frequently overlooked way to facilitate that and significantly enhance their motivation.

Conversely multi-tasking, such as scrolling through an email on our phone, or taking calls in their company is a surefire way to undermine that sense of value and compromise that motivation.

This principle transcends our professional roles into our critical personal leadership roles such as parenting. Every child craves the full presence of their parent.

The same is true for our friends and extended family. Presence deepens and strengthens our relationships.

In addition to the benefits of those in their company, presence also directly benefits the leader. When we are fully present in a task we find deeper levels of concentration and are far more likely to optimise our performance and execution.

As we move through our numerous interactions today, let us aspire to be fully present in all of them.
