“If you believe it will work out you’ll see opportunities. If you believe it won’t you will see obstacles.” Wayne Dyer

This quote is a powerful reminder that optimism is a critical leadership essential.

Leadership is challenging. All leaders will face a plethora of challenges and difficult decisions. As we seek to process those challenges and decisions, if we allow our mindset to become pessimistic, it disempowers us.

It will lead to fear and procrastination. This in turn leads to a failure to take action, missed opportunities and compromised performance.

Conversely, when we retain a relentless sense of optimism, we maintain our confidence. Our inner belief allows us to find opportunities and to take action that will realise those opportunities.

Optimism isn’t invaluable solely to the mindset and productivity of the leader. It is equally important to those they lead.

Leaders must inspire and it is very difficult for staff to draw inspiration and motivation from a pessimistic leader.

A leader who retains optimism role models a critical behaviour for his team. Optimism is infectious!

By displaying optimism you embolden those around you to feel the same emotion. This collective positive mindset facilitates the sourcing of opportunities and solutions. It helps foster a collective desire to take action. This naturally builds a powerful forward momentum that enables a team and organisation to power through challenges and periods of adversity.

Tone starts at the top and that is why optimism is such a critical leadership essential. Every leader must be relentlessly optimistic!
