Early to rise is my key to thrive

In a recent blog I talked about the development of new rituals that have positively impacted my mindset.

Another ritual I developed (and certainly the most painful to establish) was waking and rising everyday at 5.30am. This in turn allowed me to create an empowering morning routine that really energised me and created a powerful mindset to take into the rest of the day.

The last two weeks I have been trying to shake off a cold and as a consequence for the first time in months I consistently broke this ritual and woke up much later. I lost my morning routine entirely and as the old saying states ‘sometimes you only really appreciate something when it is gone.’

Rising early had given me the quiet time before the rest of my family woke. I was able to enjoy my coffee free from any disruptions and contemplate the day ahead and what I needed to get done.

It also allowed me to exercise. By the time my children woke and the mania of the day began I already had a sense of achievement and productivity which created a healthy mindset to carry with me into the day ahead.

The contrast of the last two weeks has been eye opening. Gaining an extra hour and a half of sleep hasn’t left me noticeably more refreshed. However the loss of that morning routine created a frantic start to the day. I really noticed the impact of losing that sense of control and of feeling reactive rather than proactive.

Even though the days have still been productive I have experienced a gnawing sense of frustration which I can clearly link to not exercising and starting the day on my terms enjoying my routine.

Having shaken off the cold I have no excuses not to rebuild the early rising habit and establish the ritual of a morning routine. I know it will be painful in the first instance but I also know with absolute certainty the benefits to my mindset will be well worth the effort.
